Does caffeine cause anxiety? There has been many researches done about coffee and stress. Here at Coach Bahman our stance is clear as day. All mind altering substances will not help you improve your performance in the long term. Let’s go through several researches and stories why coffee is bad for you.
The day I quit coffee.
Among other substances, I abused caffeine for 10 years until my caffeine induced panic attack. It was a day like any other and I started my day drinking 3 cups of coffee. All of a sudden I felt a discomfort in my stomach, followed by a increase in my heart rate. I felt afraid and stress, for no specific reason at all. I called my doctor, and he advised me to quit drinking caffeine, at first I thought it was nonsense. Why caffeine? After a while I decided to give it a go and I never struggled with those feelings ever again.
Let’s start with listing the scientifically proven negative health effects of caffeine before we get into stress, anxiety and panic attacks.
These are some of the reasons why I advocate against caffeine in my coaching sessions. We are going to dive in anxiety and stress for a bit here.
Coffee, stress, anxiety and panic attacks.
The reason caffeine induced panic attacks occur so frequently is because the psychoactive drug almost exactly mimics an episode of anxiety. It creates a discomfort in the stomach, increases your heart rate, increases dopamine levels, causes headaches, restlessness and muscle tremble. If you ever had an anxiety episode, this shouldn’t be new to you. This sudden episode of anxiety can lead to a panic attack. If you’re a high performing professional you will know what anxiety feels like.
The biggest danger lies in people not knowing that caffeine is capable of causing these symptoms.
Preferrably you don’t rely on mind altering substances to function, but if you are not ready to let go, make sure you cut down coffee to 1 cup a day, don’t drink it right after you wake up and not any later than 2 pm.
Your cortisol spikes early in the morning, this is your body’s natural way to help you wake up. More coffee adds more cortisol which means more stress. Not drinking coffee after 2pm helps keep your sleep schedule intact.
So how do I quit?
The way I quit coffee was replacing my cups of coffee with decaf coffee. Be mindful that decaf coffee, however small percentage, still contains caffeine. Eventually I replaced all my cups with decaf and slowly quit coffee altogether.
